National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS, was launched in 1969 to celebrate the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation. Started initially in 37 universities involving 40,000 volunteers, the scheme has grown over the years and it is implemented today with an involvement of more than 3.8 million volunteers spread over in 396 Universities, Polytechnics and 47 Councils of +2 level. The efforts of NSS volunteers have been widely acclaimed by the community, universities, colleges and general public as the NSS volunteers have been rendering selfless service to the community. The main aim of NSS is to facilitate personality development of students through social and community service.
The NSS Volunteers’ strength allocated for NSS cell of Andhra University for the year 2018-19 is 28,400 and the actual enrolment is 30100. Out of which 19565 are male and the remaining 10535 are female volunteers (SC: 4920, ST: 2098 & Others: 22984).
The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) in association with the Ministry of Human Resources Development launched Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Programme with an aim of Making Swachhata a Jan Andolan.
The internship expected to make the volunteers more sensitive towards Swachhata sensitize rural youth and generate Awareness. NSS volunteers with their glories tradition of community service are best suited to join internship in large number by enrolling.
World Environment Day is observed on June 5 every year to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity, and also to identify problems related to the environment and ways to take corrective action. The 2013 year theme for World Environment Day is Think.Eat.Save. World Environment Day aims at addressing environmental challenges that include climate change, global warming, disasters and conflicts, harmful substances, environmental governance, ecosystem management and resource efficiency.
World Environment Day has received tremendous support from the public and governments through various awareness campaigns such as beach clean-ups, organizing concerts, exhibits, film festivals, community events and to spread the message, which is to improve the quality of life of all living beings on this planet without harming nature. All the activities of World Environment Day are carried out to spread eco-awareness and increase green footprint. All the NSS Units under Andhra University jurisdiction observed in a befitting manner.
On July 11, 2018 World Population Day was observed and rallies were organized by all the NSS Units. In Andhra University area a good number of Rallies, Slogans, Road Shows were conducted by the NSS volunteers on “spreading awareness about the exploding world population and the importance of reproductive health” . In this connection, various competitions were conducted in A.U. A Massive Rally with 2,000 NSS volunteers was organized in Visakhapatnam and distributed Mementos, Certificates to the Prize winners by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Assembly hall, A.U., Visakhapatnam.
The NSS Unit of Andhra University jurisdiction engaged in providing relief and rehabilitation services to the affected State of Kerala victims. NSS volunteers collected relief fund and the other material new and used clothes such as Blankets, Saris, Utensils and provisions. Some of the Units have sent an amount of Rs. 82,604/- through a DD Chief Ministers Distress Relief Fund,Tiruvananthapuram and some units sent directly online.
The NSS Units of Andhra University jurisdiction have celebrated NSS Day celebrations on 24.09.2018 in their respective colleges. In this connection, different competitions like, elocution, rangoli, poster painting, essay writing, dancing organised in their colleges.
Ms. EPS Bhagyalakshmi, District NSS Programme Officer of Visakhapatnam has attended a meeting on voters registration, electoral process awareness and participation in the ensuing General Elections-2019 on 29.10.2018 in the Conference hall, Building No. 5, A.P. Secretariat, Velagapudi.
The College has Four(04) NSS Units with a total strength of 400 student Volunteers .
